Redwheel

The Next Growth Wave: How Utilities and Infrastructure Are Powering the Future

Utilities and infrastructure businesses are entering a significant new growth phase with capital expenditures rising to upgrade aging assets and modernise to meet the new needs created by the electrification of economies. After 20 years of flat power demand in the OECD markets, power consumption is expected to increase 40% by 2040. Jean-Hugues de Lamaze, lead portfolio manager of Ecofin’s listed infrastructure strategy [and the London-listed investment trust Ecofin Global Utilities and Infrastructure Trusts plc], believes a combination of renewables and 24/7 technologies, such as nuclear or natural gas, will meet this demand and that with de-risked business models, returns on investment will be strong. He foresees similar demand dynamics will be evident in water, environmental services and transport infrastructure. He expects stock valuations, which remain low on average, will appreciate as these businesses prove their potential.

Jean-Hugues de Lamaze

Portfolio Manager

Jean-Hugues de Lamaze joined Ecofin in early 2008 and is the portfolio manager in charge of the Ecofin Sustainable Listed Infrastructure strategy. Prior to joining Ecofin, Jean-Hugues co-founded UV Capital LLP, a utilities and infrastructure hedge fund. Before that, he worked for Goldman Sachs where he oversaw the European Utilities research team, and for Credit Suisse First Boston as head of French Research & Strategy. His professional career began as a financial analyst at Enskilda Securities. Jean-Hugues has over 30 years of experience of international equity markets, from equity research & strategy to investment management. He also was a Non-Executive Director of Direct Energie, France's 3rd largest energy operator from 2012 to 2019. He is a CFAF certified analyst and a member of the French Financial Analysts Society. He graduated from INSEAD (International Executive Programme, 2000), from the Paris-based business school Institut Supérieur de Gestion and earned a LLB in Business Law from Paris II-Assas University.
